A place where you can find out what is happening at the Casita...
Waskesiu Golf Club Giveaway

Recently, in the windy chilly late afternoon, we had our last couples’ night at the Waskesiu Golf Course in Waskesiu, Saskatchewan. Thirty couples braved the wind & cold with bunnyhugs, jackets toques, hats, and long pants to finish off the weekly Saturday night couples’ night. After the golf, we all gathered in the Club House for a wonderful wind up dinner of BBQ’d steak, huge butter grilled prawns, baby potatoes, ceasar salad and garlic bread. The evening was hosted by Richard Kilburn from his investment firm. They made a few draws for prizes and then we (Bob & Linda) made a draw for a 7 night stay at the Casita for this upcoming season. We had last year’s winners there so we let the husband make the draw. Richard had a little side bet draw going, wherein everyone present could make a $20.00 or more bet that their name would be drawn for the trip. If the winner for the 7 nights’ accommodation were present and this winner had taken the $20.00 side bet, then Richard would write them a $1000.00 cheque to put towards their trip. Of course everyone took the side bet. We pretty much had a black […]

SIAPA installs new water lines!

Just an update on the street we live on in La Penita! About a month ago, we received photos that SIAPA (the water department) was installing new water lines on our street. The photos looked a little devastating at first because we are open in the summer and have lots of Mexican clientele visit us from inland for their summer vacations. Our summer managers assured us that it was causing little or no disruption for our arriving guests. There was one side of the road still open and of course, the front street as well. After only about a week or so, we received new photos that the work was done, all our lines are new and water should run even more swiftly than it did before. Sometimes, things do work out in the end. We didn’t know before we left for Canada in April that this was going to happen but we are very thankful for all work that is done to help improve the betterment of Casita de La Penita and the people of our community. Thank you SIAPA!

The Ally Cat Catamaran

This week on Wednesday, 40 friends and guests of the Casita went on a private day trip with the Ally Cat crew on their spectacular catamaran sailing boat. Departing from La Cruz Marina, we went up the coast and out to sea to the Marietas Islands. Anyone who has ever been there knows that these islands are something unique; they have a private beach in the middle that’s only accessible by swimming through a cave-like entrance. Once on the beach, we were then able to go in to another cave with 10 and 20 foot openings while waves crashed all around us; yet the water in the cave was relatively calm. Of course, in Mexico, a day at sea like this always seems to include non-stop drinks of all varieties; whether it was pop and juice, beer, or pina colodas, rarely was anyone empty-handed. The food was also always available from breakfast through to the end of the day. Fresh fruit, chocolate cakes, chips and salsa, nachos, and an amazing Mexican lunch! With snorkeling equipment, kayaks, and several paddle boards, there was lots to do when the boat was anchored in 2 different spots. This year, they had a new […]

Casita and Guests Rescue 13 Turtles

On February 23rd, at about 6:00pm, a group of our guests gathered around 13 baby turtles on the beach in front of Casita de La Penita. Many of us selectively chose a turtle from the basin in which they had been swimming all day after being rescued from a mud puddle, set it in the sand, and encouraged them all toward the water. After about 15 minutes, all 13 turtles made it to the water as we watched and hoped for their survival. The sun had set and the birds overheard had largely disappeared for the evening. If we’re lucky, some of them will survive and in a number of years will be back to this very beach to start this cycle over again by laying dozens of eggs… A big thanks to the sanctuary for coming to check on them upon their discovery and for giving us instructions on how to safely release them later in the day. Rather than taking the turtles and having to do this work at the sanctuary, they gave Casita de La Penita guests approvals to do this and partake in this experience.

Mujeres a Mujeres Fashion Show

On January 27th, 2015, we were MC’s for the 12th annual Women to Women/Mujeres a Mujeres fashion show that has been held in this Jaltemba Bay area for the last 12 years. To our knowledge, it is one of the biggest events this side of Puerto Vallarta. We entertain 400 guests with fashions from some of the local area designers. This year, we showcased 5 different designers. The fashion show has been held for the past 3 years in the lovely garden area of the home of Thomas Bartlett. The setting is exquisite with all the lovely palm trees in the well groomed garden area. We also have many sponsors that contribute with helping us cover a few of the expenses incurred. Sponsors such as Costco, Casa Escaleras, Comex, as well as a few others, help to expunge some of the necessary rentals such as tables, chairs, dishes, bathrooms, etc. Our money helps to keep, at this present time, 18 young ladies in university – as well we make gift hampers at Christmas time for some very needy families. We also have a “feed the children breakfast” program at the local middle school. Our mission statement is to help women […]

Always improving at the Casita

Owning and operating apartments in front of the ocean is a job that we both love. Sometimes the renovations are the part that we don’t love! This year, we returned home to a couple of walls that were in need of some immediate help due to the havoc that the heavy rainy season had in La Pe??ita and area had over the summer. We have been repairing these same walls for 15 years, or so it seems. It was about time to do a change. Some lovely stone lookalike tiles were chosen for the long wall where we house the pool equipment and before long, we had a beautiful wall that will hopefully be maintenance free for us. It is sad to say that the last of the antique tiles from the upper balcony of the apartments have also been replaced. We loved the red, octagon look but time had taken it’s toll on them and it was time to say Adios. The upper balcony now has a terracotta color tile to compliment the balcony below. Now we had to think about the apartment staircase. This was done 15 years ago but we have gained so much more knowledge about […]
